Zinc
Zinc now has many uses, especially in alloys with copper known as brass. In the past, zinc and its ores were considered of little value. Zinc alloys are used in coin production, pipes, and battery electrodes. It is also applied to iron sheets and wires to prevent rusting, and in car parts and common zinc sheets. Zinc compounds are used in various coatings, and its alloys are important in producing the well-known German silver.
Zinc is a versatile metal thanks to its corrosion resistance and formability:
- Galvanization: Used to protect iron and steel from rust via galvanization.
- Alloy production: Forms alloys like brass and bronze to enhance mechanical properties.
- Batteries: Used in zinc-air and zinc-carbon batteries.
- Chemical industries: : Acts as a catalyst in many chemical processes and is used in paints and pharmaceuticals.
